C.A.R. Video Lounge [Hall A 12 | Foyer]

Directors Lounge presents selected video art and experimental animation films by Max Hattler (Hong Hong).

Max Hattler, Serial Parallels, 2019

Max Hattler

Max Hattler is an abstract animator and professor at the School of Creative Media at City University of Hong Kong.  His animation work is best described as experimental film or animation, in strong contrast to traditional animation practice. Hattler often works with abstract shapes and forms that multiply and occupy the screen, creating a unique macrocosm. He explores a variety of image creation techniques, including analogue and lens-based methods, as well as 3D and 2D digital animation.

“What you hear is what you see.”  The sound of Max Hattlers films is punchy and highly synchronized to the images. Inspired by Norman McLaren, a Scottish-Canadian artist working from the 1930s to the 1970s, who was experimenting by drawing ink onto the optical soundtrack, Hattler generated the sounds in Norm (2025) by directly reading the film’s image as an optical soundtrack.

Julia Murakami
Julia Murakami “La Dame Aux Fleurs – Reliquie I”, 2025, Fine Art Print

Julia Murakami

La Dame aux Fleurs – Reliquie I reflects on the ambivalence of creation in the digital age. Image and the religious relic form an interplay that addresses questions of authenticity, originality, and artificial consciousness.
The work, respectively the installation, opens up a space in which the tension between man and machine, between reality and illusion, becomes visible. By questioning the authenticity of these creations, it invites the viewer to reflect on their possibilities and limitations: Can artificial intelligence be genuine?

Rainer Görß

For us (Ania Rudolph and Rainer Görß), art in architecture/art in public urban spaces encompasses commemorative culture, industrial conversion projects, color spaces & guidance systems, urban interventions & artistic documentation. Our diverse works in the field of architecture since 1990 are interconnected in many ways and lead beyond urban spaces to open questions in cultural landscapes.
Our work is based on questions between culture and nature, historical spaces, and modernity, as well as the resulting social, mental, and physical movement dynamics in their multidimensionality and multiperspectivity.
The conception, realization, and sustainable maintenance of our work arise from the thematization of socio-ecological contexts. Largely ecological production, materials, regeneration, longevity, and openness to intergenerational discourse in reception are the foundations of our work processes, which are coordinated with all participants. We see our work as part of the challenging transformation processes of the industrial society in which we live and work.
Open design coordination discussions, participatory working methods, and consideration of all forms of architectural design languages, whether historical or contemporary, are the starting point for our design concepts. From our point of view, art in architecture should follow form in function, in an artistically expanded sense, sensually.

Rainer Görß regularly collaborates with Ania Rudolph.
