Special Directors Lounge Screening:
Bruno Gularte Barreto – 5 Casas (Five Houses)
Sunday, 25 February 2024, 5:30 p.m.
Z-Bar, Bergstraße 2, 10115 Berlin-Mitte
This Sunday, Brazilian artist Bruno Gularte Barreto will present his film “5 Casas”. The documentary was first presented at IDFA in Amsterdam; this will be the German premiere. The visually breathtaking film with its captivating meandering story was conceived in a long term project revisiting the house of his childhood in the South of Brazil. An earlier version of the film was already presented at Directors Lounge in 2016, and we are now thrilled to host Bruno in person with the final film.
The 5 HOUSES project consists of a series of photographs, photo-installations, objects, videos, a feature documentary and a book by Bruno Gularte Barreto. Based on the testimonies of people in a small town on the border between Brazil and Uruguay, 5 HOUSES tells stories of resilience against racism, homophobia, misogyny, ageism and real estate speculation. These stories are stitched together by the artist’s own childhood memories, his parents having died from cancer caused by pesticide contamination in the city’s water.
