In 2012, H.D. Motyl’s Nude Descending a Staircase #2 was selected for screening at [DL8]. Motyl flew over to Berlin from the US, where the producer and screenwriter is also an Associate Professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and active in the Big Muddy Film Festival.
What is the muddiest thing about Big Muddy?
The muddiest thing about the Big Muddy is the Big Muddy River itself. The films are crystal clear; it’s the water that’s been dredged up.
You can be in any time, place or situation right now. What would you choose?
The first thing that comes to my mind is Katherine Hepburn. I could be Katherine Hepburn, and Spencer Tracy is on top of me. But I’d rather it be Cary Grant…
Any particular time and place?
Some snowy evening in front of the fire.
What animal in your eyes needs saving from extinction first?
This is really hard… I’ll say polar bears.
If you could create an animal, what would it look like?
I don’t know what it would look like, but I would want it to be something domesticated. The unconditional love of a dog and the purring of a cat with the softness of a lamb. With teeth, but totally vegetarian.
A reason not to get on your bad side?
I can be really caustic, and I think I hold a bit of a grudge sometimes.
Is there anything that you think is whole or complete now that needs dividing?
Power is whole and it needs to be divided more, especially in the country I live in. It needs to be divided more between the people – take it from the top and divide it down to more of us middle classes and lower classes.
Where will art be in ten years?
In some pixels somewhere, pixelated everywhere.
A memory of being at DL?
At the airport, my luggage was lost. The lady didn’t speak any English, I don’t speak German, but we found out that we both speak Spanish. That’s how I got my luggage delivered; otherwise it would have taken forever. But I think my favourite part was, honestly, after the shows were over, just sitting at the bar and talking, sitting around with all those people. And you know; it was special to me – it was only my second time in Berlin, and I spent so much time in what used to be the East. For an American who grew up knowing about East Berlin and the communist world, it was interesting to be in that area, to know that this used to be a forbidden zone of some kind.

I’m biting my tongue!

2012 wurde der Film Nude Descending a Staircase #2 von H.D. Motyl für Vorführungen bei [DL8] ausgewählt. Produzent und Drehbuchautor Motyl, der auch als Lehrbeauftragter an der Southern Illinois University Carbondale doziert und an dem Big Muddy Film Festival aktiv beteiligt, ist extra fürs Festival aus den USA nach Berlin geflogen.
Was ist “das Trübste” an Big Muddy [etwa „Großer Trüber Fluss‟]?
Das Trübste an Big Muddy ist der Big Muddy River selbst. Die Filme sind glasklar, es ist das Wasser, das aufgerührt worden ist.
Wenn Du Zeit, Ort und Situation wählen könntest, wo wärst du?
Das erste, was mir einfällt ist Katherine Hepburn. Ich könnte Katherine Hepburn sein, und Spencer Tracy läge auf mir. Mir wäre es aber lieber, es wäre Cary Grant …
Zu welcher Zeit und an welchem Ort?
An einem verschneiten Abend vor dem Kamin.
Welches Tier sollte man in deinen Augen zuerst vor dem Aussterben retten?
Das ist echt schwer… Ich sage Eisbären.
Wenn du ein Tier erschaffen könntest, wie würde es aussehen?
Ich weiß nicht, wie es aussehen würde, aber es sollte ein Haustier sein. Die bedingungslose Liebe eines Hundes und das Schnurren einer Katze mit der Weichheit eines Lammes. Mit Zähnen, aber völlig vegetarisch.
Ein Grund, weswegen man sich bei dir nicht unbeliebt machen sollte?
Ich kann wirklich ätzend sein, und ich denke, dass ich manchmal dazu neige, nachtragend zu sein.
Gibt es etwas, das zur heutigen Zeit ganz oder vollständig ist, dass deiner Meinung aufgeteilt werden sollte?
Macht ist ein Monopol, das aufgeteilt werden sollte, vor allem in dem Land, in dem ich lebe. Sie muss mehr unter den Menschen aufgeteilt werden – von oben weggenommen und mehr mit uns unten geteilt werden, mit der Mittelschicht und Unterschicht.
Wo wird die Kunst in zehn Jahren sein?
Irgendwo in der Welt der Pixel, völlig verpixelt.
Eine Erinnerung an DL?
Am Flughafen ist mein Gepäck verloren gegangen. Die Dame konnte kein Englisch, ich spreche kein Deutsch, aber wir fanden heraus, dass wir beide Spanisch konnten. So habe ich mein Gepäck geliefert bekommen; sonst hätte es ewig gedauert. Aber ehrlich gesagt, denke ich, was mir am meisten gefallen hat, war nach den Vorführungen einfach an der Bar zu sitzen und zu reden, mit all diesen Menschen zusammenzusitzen. Und weißt du, es war etwas Besonderes für mich – es war erst mein zweites Mal in Berlin, und ich verbrachte so viel Zeit in dem Teil, der früher mal der Ostteil war. Für einen Amerikaner, der in seiner Kindheit über Ost-Berlin und die kommunistische Welt gehört hatte, war es interessant, in diesem Gebiet zu sein, zu wissen, dass dies eine Art verbotene Zone war.
