Gabraz Sanna – Diários de uma paisagem

Gabraz Sanna is coming back to Berlin to present the film he recorded here seven years ago with Tantão, the performer and iconic painter from Rio. The film portrays a passage of night and day with Tantão through a winterly Berlin, featuring exhibition, performance, and everyday life.
The program comprises two more short films: Ruína from 2016 and Ruído from 2018. The shorts portray two important figures in Brazilian culture: Maria Bethânia, singer, and Caetano Veloso, songwriter and singer. They are some of the most important musicians in Brazil and part of the cultural movement Tropicalismo, which encompasses both art and political movements. Ruína shows Maria Bethânia reading a poem by Manoel de Barros in a very intimate, personal moment in what appears to be her backyard, followed by images of a woman (possibly her?) under a waterfall. Ruído starts with a close-up of Caetano Veloso whistling a song, then reflecting on poetry and life, and finally singing a song on stage. The soundscapes in the background of both films open up the perception of the surrounding environment, making the impression of the images even more intimate.
In many ways, the film Diários de uma paisagem continues Gabraz’s series of intimate film portraits. The camera follows Tantão during his stay in Berlin. His entrance to his film show at Z-Bar, his performance at the cinema and gallery, the preparation of the exhibition, and his lodging – latter interrupted by the police for “causing a disturbance at 3 a.m.” With only a few words of dialogue, Tantão is characterized through his gestures, performances, sounds, habits, and by his audience following his shows.
