• 22 h • 10 pm Experiments In Terror curated by Noel Lawrence Usama Alshaibi “Hold My Scissors” Video | 4 mins. | 2004 Dominated by blood-thirsty Maenads, this video elaborates on the theme of obsessive love that rapidly manifests into a mythical gore-fest. Ben Rivers "Terror!" Video | 2007 | 24 mins. “This masterfully edited compilation documentary analyzes the morphology of the horror film. Stringing together the most common tropes and scenes of slashers, zombie flicks, slumber party massacres, etc. into a single meta-horror opus, Rivers not so much deconstructs the genre as provides a tribute that reveals its limitations but also its visceral power. It’s films like this that explain why I do film programs like ‘Experiments in Terror’” – Noel Lawrence J.X. Williams "Sex Crimes of the 21st Century" 16mm | 1974 | 10 mins. "I had fled the US because of a obscenity rap (again) and was doing a porn shoot up North in Toronto. I actually had a respectable budget for once and we flew in some top talent like John Holmes and Marilyn Chambers. We even had enough money to commission a bizzarro-electronic soundtrack by some local goof named Bruce Haack who recorded (get this) children's records for a living. The production was unremarkable besides the presence of an uncredited producer who later cast Marilyn in a horror film he directed. I even lent him outtakes of her to use in his film. Anyway, I only have the first ten minutes of the film. I don't know what happened to the rest of it but the film wasn't very good anyhow." -- J.X. Williams (as told to Noel Lawrence by the anonymous donor of the film) Damon Packard "The Early 70s Horror Trailer" Video | 1999 | 8 mins. "Damon Packard’s The Early 70s Horror Trailer (1999) re-creates the mood and style of the absurd, fustian trailers from the golden age of the horror movie. With its urgent soundtrack (that even incorporates the shocked voice after the film appears to have ended), roving camera angles and cheesy optical effects the film encapsulates the quasi-psychedelic ambience of the era." - Jack Sargeant Mike Kuchar "Born of the Wind" 8mm | 1963 | 24 mins. "A tender and realistic story of a scientist who falls in love with a mummy he has restored to life... 2,000 years as a mummy Starring Donna Kerness, Bob Cowan, Janice Jones Marie Losier & Guy Maddin "Manuelle Labor" Collaboration film with Marie Losier and Guy Maddin. Two sisters, five brothers, a doctor and two nurses and the miraculous birth of a pair of hands..but whose hands…“Marie, that shot of the hands coming out o’ your womb is a dilly!!! What an honour to be born of you! your son, Guy” (Guy Maddin)
